🎃 With Halloween just around the corner, we want to take this opportunity to remind parents and carers to only buy fancy dress costumes from reputable retailers and to always check the label – clothing will always burn if in contact with naked flames but some faster than others - Check out our top tips.

🚑 Emergency services advise anyone who suffers a burn to cool it under a cold running tap for 20 minutes, and in severe cases to call 999 and cover the wound with cling film or a sterile, non-fluffy dressing or cloth and seek medical attention immediately.

👶 Did you know that hot water bottles and microwavable wheat bags should never be placed in your baby's sleep space? It adds an unneccessary risk and puts baby at risk of overheating which can lead to sudden infant death syndrome #SIDS.

🌡 If your baby feels cold, add an extra layer or use a higher tog sleep sack - check temperature by feeling the back of baby's neck or tummy to check they are not getting too warm or too cold.

‼️ Hot water bottles and wheat bags have not been designed or tested for young children and therefore not recommended for use even though some may look like cuddly toys.

🔍 If you have a hot water bottle in your home that is used by an adult, please check that the item has not expired as the product only has a 2 year lifespan. Look for the daisy wheel at top which will show a date of manufacture ie 04/22 (Month & Year). For safety reasons please dispose of out-of-date products immediately even if they look ok.

📍 FACT - In England, one child under five is admitted to the hospital every day after falling from a building, including from windows and balconies. Falls from windows are the most common cause of accidental injury to children.
Falls from windows and balconies can have tragic or fatal consequences, but many injuries could be prevented. Children under 4 are most at risk, and toddlers can fall out of windows that are open as little as 5 inches.

We urge parents and guardians to follow our simple tips to help keep children safe and prevent risk of accidental falls 👇

✅ The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) recommends fitting child resistant window restrictors or safety catches to stop windows opening more than 10 cm/4 inches. Talk to Safe at Home scheme if you live in Luton as we can provide RoSPA approved window restrictors to local families.
✅ Move furniture away from windows to prevent children climbing.
✅ Lock the balcony door and keep the key high out of reach of children.
✅ Keep the balcony clear - remember children can climb on chairs, tables, toys and boxes.
